EPICURE´s First GPU Hackathon Empowers Researchers with Advanced Computing Skills
EPICURE successfully concluded its inaugural GPU Hackathon, a four-day intensive event that brought together HPC researchers and developers at CINECA in Bologna, Italy. The hackathon, which ran from October 28-31, 2024, provided participants with comprehensive training and hands-on experience in GPU programming.
Participants gained valuable experience working with the Leonardo Booster cluster’s state-of-the-art NVIDIA GPUs, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application. The event featured a series of expert-led sessions, from fundamental GPU computing concepts to advanced optimization techniques.
The first day began with an introduction to EPICURE’s HPC application support services for EuroHPC users, followed by comprehensive sessions on GPU computing fundamentals, CUDA programming, and OpenAcc programming with Nsight profiling tools. Subsequent days focused on advanced GPU optimization and extensive lab sessions, where participants worked on real-world applications.
A highlight of the hackathon was the “Bring Your Own Code” sessions, where participants received direct guidance from GPU programming experts to optimize their specific applications. The pair programming approach proved particularly effective, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing among attendees.
